The Origins of Teyuna: The Ancient City of the Tayrona


Known to the indigenous people as Teyuna, Ciudad Perdida was a major urban center of the advanced Tayrona civilization, built around the 8th century AD, even before the famed Machu Picchu in Peru! This impressive settlement stands as a testament to the engineering and social organization of its builders.


  • A Mountaintop Metropolis: The city extends over a complex network of stone terraces, paved paths, retaining walls, and meticulously designed circular plazas on the mountain slopes. Although only a portion is accessible on the tour today, it's estimated to have covered some 32 hectares, revealing the magnitude of this ancient center.


  • Ancestral Engineering: The Tayrona demonstrated incredible skill in managing resources and adapting to a challenging natural environment, creating a sustainable system that endured for centuries.
